Primarily a self-taught artist, he would paint as a child by watching other artists on PBS. From an early age, both of Zonly’s grandmothers had an artistic impact by introducing him to the other, artsier side of the world. Additionally, Zonly has strong influences from his Kumeyaay and Chumash heritage, which led to him creating multiple Native American collections. Over the years, he has spent thousands of hours learning and perfecting various styles and techniques. This commitment and drive has allowed for Zonly to develop his unique style as a pop expressionist artist and open his own gallery, Studio Z, in downtown Edmond, OK. Operating out of Studio Z, Zonly currently specializes in custom artwork, shoes, murals, and performance painting. Since opening Studio Z, Zonly has become deeply involved in our local community. He has donated his time, talent, and paintings to many of our local charities, such as WINGS, The Anna’s House Foundation, Oklahoma Lawyers for Children, the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic, and Ronald McDonald House Charities.

My wife and I love to travel and one of our favorite destinations is Santa Fe, New Mexico.  It was after a visit there in the Fall of 2011 that I was inspired to start painting professionally. I thank each of those who give words of encouragement along my journey; and a special thanks to those who have chosen to display my art in their private collections.

Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Frederick Berg Canvas provided by Zahrai Family On the rear wall (east side) of the one-story building at 100 N. Broadway, just east on Hurd Avenue, this is a bright, colorful mural 60 ft. by 13 ft. called Buffalo Off Broadway. It is painted in aqua, gold and white and runs the full length of the building. On the south end is a large buffalo painted in aqua and gold in a style which mimics mosaic or pixels (little squares of color). The sun is depicted above, and a large chevron beneath the buffalo. At the bottom is a checkerboard of gold and hot pink. Along the upper portion of the wall is a checkerboard of aqua and gold. At the north end of the mural another large buffalo is painted aqua and gray, and a row of four smaller checkerboard buffaloes finish out the landscape on the north. The mural was painted by Zonly Looman, owner of Studio Z which occupies a portion of this building. It was painted in April 2017. NOTE: 7/3/17 – We just learned that the mural is still a work-in-progress. The portion on the north end which is less colorful is still being worked on. That portion will be named “Herd on Hurd” (the name of the street to the south). Will monitor and update as the mural is completed. UPDATE: 7/28/17 – Mural is complete. Added two additional photos of the north end after completion.

Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Edmond Parks Foundation This is a fun nature-themed mural painted on a climbing wall in Hafer Park. It is located next to the trails, pavilions, playground, and duck pond, so it is seen by many people! There are very large spiders, vines, and flowers spaced around the wall. Kids love climbing on this wall, and the activity doesn’t seem to be wearing down the mural, so it was done well.

This mural was a WPA project, commissioned in 1939. The painting hung in the lobby of the Edmond Post Office for decades. When the old post office was closed and the building was remodeled to eventually house the Edmond Municipal Courts, the new lobby did not have a location to hang the mural. The Turner mural is now hanging in the City Council Chambers of the same building.
