Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with OnCue These two ravens are easy to miss if you don’t know to look for them! They are standing on the ground in the landscaping of a new convenience and gas station, and they look very realistic. They appear to be pecking for food in the flowers. There is a sidewalk along this stretch of street, so you don’t have to bother the landscaping to visit this sculpture. It is one of many placed around town by the Edmond Visual Arts Commission, partnering with local businesses and individuals.

    Category: Indoor Sculpture; Memorial/Monument
Ronald J. Norick was born and raised in Oklahoma City. “Ron” served as the city’s mayor from 1987-1998, following in his father’s footsteps. During his term as mayor, the first Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS) was voted on and approved by the city. MAPS is a one-cent sales tax that went towards nine major Oklahoma City projects. MAPS1 included the Chesapeake Energy Arena, Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, Bricktown Canal, Civic Center Music Hall, Cox Convention Center, State Fair Park, Oklahoma River, Spirit of Oklahoma Trolley Transportation Link, and a new library, later named the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library. MAPS was the first step in putting Oklahoma City on the national stage for redevelopment and growth. 20 years later, MAPS3 has been passed and public works continue to develop the city. During his 11 years in office, Norick also had to help restore Oklahoma City after the Alfred P. Murrah bombing in 1995 where 168 people died and 680 were injured. It was the most destructive act of terrorism in the United States before September 11, 2001. Currently, Norick is the controlling manager of Norick Investment Company, LLC, which manages the financial holdings of 20 family members representing three generations of their family. He remains involved with Oklahoma City University, the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, and many more. This bust can be found in the Ronald J. Norick Library in Downtown Oklahoma City, a project funded by MAPS.

This relief honoring the pioneers of the 1889 Oklahoma Land Run stretches 21 feet at Bicentennial Park in Downtown Oklahoma City. The Land Run took place on April 22, 1889 as 50,000 people raced to claim the available two million acres in the Unassigned Lands that eventually led to statehood in 1907. By the end of the day, both Oklahoma City and Gurthrie had established cities of about 10,000 people. By the second week schools had already been opened and the settlers really began to make a living farming and trading. Within one month, Oklahoma City had five banks and six newspapers. Rome may not have been built in a day, but Oklahoma was. “Run of 1889” contains more than two hundred and fifty figures for 21 feet at the entrance to Bicentennial Park, renovated in 2012 as part of Project 180 in Oklahoma City. Project 180 was a four year, $176 million redesign of downtown streets, sidewalks, parks and plazas to improve appearance and make the central core more pedestrian friendly. The relief shows mainly horses and riders racing to stake their claim in the Unassigned Lands that would eventually lead to the state of Oklahoma.
