  • Paper Airplane Journey of Imagination
    Paper Airplane Journey of Imagination
    Category: Outdoor Sculpture
Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with John Ross Elementary PTO This is one of the locals’ favorite pieces of art in downtown Edmond. A boy is standing on his paper airplane and flying through the air. It is adorable. Few people notice the tiny man at the very bottom of the sculpture, so be sure to check it out when you visit this piece of art. It is located on the SE corner of Broadway and Main in downtown Edmond. There are lots of other sculptures in the immediate area to enjoy as well as some historical markers and an Oklahoma Centennial Clock.

Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Dakil Auctioneers, Inc. This is a great sculpture that I almost missed. It’s a man, laying IN the sidewalk, in Downtown Edmond. I had gotten out of my car to find a different sculpture, and almost stepped on this one. After I got the picture, I watched others walking by the sidewalk, and I’m not sure they saw him! He is strategically placed in front of a bench (to keep people from tripping on him, I think). This is a fun piece, and it is one of many placed around town by the Edmond Visual Arts Commission. There are about 20 sculptures right along Broadway in downtown Edmond.
  • Pathway I and II
    Pathway I and II
    Category: Outdoor Sculpture
Sponsor: Purchased with 1% CIP funds for the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel & Conference Center These two steel sculptures of grass (called Pathway 1 and II) are at the west side of the brand new Edmond Conference Center/Hilton Garden Inn. There is lots of parking to the west of the sculptures, and a drive-way between the sculptures (that are in a landscaped area) and the building. Dale Lamphere has other similar sculptures in Edmond, including Tall Grass and Windswept. Pathways I and II are approximately 12 feet tall, and are on a base that’s about 2′ tall. They both represent very long strands of grass, and they reflect the sunlight when it hits them making them look very shiny.

    Category: Indoor Sculpture
In 1971, Patience Sewell Latting became the first and only woman Mayor of Oklahoma City. She was born in Texhoma, Oklahoma in 1918 and graduated with honors from the University in Oklahoma before receiving a master’s degree in economics and statistics from Columbia University in 1939. She first began her career in politics through the Parent Teacher Association and the League of Women Voters. She then worked her way through the ranks of the Oklahoma City Council until she was voted Mayor of Oklahoma City. She served from 1971-1983 and played a huge role in a master development plan that led to several new parks like the Myriad Gardens and a downtown redevelopment. During her term, the National Municipal League presented the All-America City Award to Oklahoma City in 1978. She won several other personal awards including the Outstanding Oklahoman by Phi Beta Kappa (1976), Woman of the Year in Civic Work by the Oklahoma City chapter of Theta Sigma Phi (1961), the Outstanding Woman of Oklahoma by the Soroptimists (1969) and in 1980 she was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. This bust-sized portrait can be found in the third floor of City Hall where her legacy still remains. Sculpted by Sohail Shehada, Patience Latting set a precedent of development and progress for the city.

    Category: Memorial/Monument; Outdoor Sculpture
As a part of the 2007 Oklahoma Centennial Celebration, multiple portraits of the most influential Oklahoman baseball players were placed in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown Ballpark. Among them is Paul Glee Waner, sculpted by Jim Franklin. Waner was born in Harrah, Oklahoma on April 16, 1903. Paul Waner made his Major League debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 13, 1926, where he remained for the next 15 years. During his career, he became a member of the very elite 3,000 hits club. Paul and his little brother, Lloyd, played right and center field respectively, and were nicknamed “Big Poison” and “Little Poison”. Paul earned three National League batting titles, was named an All-Star four different times, and was the Most Valuable Player in 1927. After finishing his career playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Boston Braves, and New York Yankees, he retired in 1945, finishing with a career batting average of .333. Waner was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1952. He passed away in Sarasota, Florida in 1965 at the age of 62, but was ranked number 62 on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players and in 1007, his number 11 was retired by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Sponsor: Privately Owned To the east of the main entrance to First Christian Church on the south side of the new sanctuary on 2nd Street, a stone pedestal about three feet high is topped with a small bronze sculpture. The dove is symbolic of its name – “Peace”. The dove has its wings outspread, with a wingspan of about fifteen inches. In this Winter setting, with a thick layer of leaves on the ground, we almost missed seeing this lovely sculpture.

    Category: Outdoor Sculpture
Sponsor: Purchased by the City of Edmond before the Edmond Visual Arts Commission was formed This bronze sculpture of a man beating a sword into a plowshare is located in Stephenson Park. It is a beatiful sculpture and appropriately placed next to the Edmond Historical Museum. The figure holding up the hammer really adds to the height of the artwork, and the large 5-sided base makes it a unique memorial. The park is home to many historical buildings: the Ntl. Register of Historic Places State Armory, WPA American Legion Hut, the Oklahoma Territory’s First Schoolhouse. This sculpture dedication was attended by many in the community, and the dedicated bricks surrounding the sculpture are placed to honor veterans. The bricks have occasionally been rearranged!
  • Philodendron Dome
    Philodendron Dome
    Category: Outdoor Sculpture
The Philodendron Dome can be found on the beautiful grounds of the Myriad Botanical Gardens in Downtown Oklahoma City. Philodendron is a tropical American climbing plant that is widely grown as a greenhouse/indoor plant, which is fitting considering the dome is on the southeast side of the Crystal Bridge, an indoor botanical garden. The dome contains many huge leaves, with vines and roots climbing among the curved metal pieces forming the dome. The leaves resemble a Philodendron plant, except in size. The leaves on this sculpture are up to three feet long. Oklahoma native artist Laurie Spencer says that domes “create an atmosphere of quiet contemplating” and that “sounds resonate in a wonderful way inside the domes.” The Philodendron Dome is a great addition to one of Oklahoma City’s most popular and most beautiful attractions.

Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Bob and Kathy Thomas We have lived on the SE corner of 15th & Coltrane since 1972. When the City of Edmond built Lake Arcadia, enlarged the intersection and the traffic increased on 15th we realized our corner was the perfect location for a piece of Public Art. It had to be large since there was no “walk-by” traffic. We traveled to Loveland, Colorado to view the Art in the Park where artist display their larger art sculptures. There we met Greg Reiche and saw his beautiful, large sculptures made of metal and stone. We told him what we envisioned and after several months he drew what we considered the perfect piece for our corner. We worked with Randel Shadid and the Visual Arts Commission and together we decided on Portal de Vida II made out of Colorado Red Sandstone. The piece is 11 feet tall and 9 feet wide. Greg came and installed the piece on June 6, 2005. That is not the end of our story. The statue had been standing on the corner for several weeks and mysteriously the metal “gong” as we called it (a large, round hanging bronze piece) was cut away and stolen. The City had Greg make another similar piece and it was installed. Not long after that was replaced the 2nd “gong” was stolen. This time Greg made a “gong” out of stone and glass and it is what hangs in the middle today. That is still not the end of the story. We returned from a trip one evening and as we turned into our drive we notice something was sitting against the sculpture. It was the missing first “gong”! We have no idea who or where it came from but written on the piece, in white shoe polish were the words “EARN THIS”. We never knew if the story was true but it was rumored the “gong” had been living in the locker room of one of the local High Schools and had been taken on a dare. So there is our story. We still have the beautiful piece of Public Art on our corner and it is quite a landmark in our wonderful ARTful City of Edmond, Oklahoma.

This sculpture of two square dancers is at the Oklahoma State Fair Park. The dancers are directly west of the huge State Fair arch and east of 14 Flags Plaza, in the median at the end of General Pershing Boulevard. The pair are on a tall foundation that has plaques on 3 sides. The two figures are dressed in typical square-dancing attire and shoes. The man is holding the woman’s hands, and they are both facing forward and appear to be in the midst of a dance move. The woman’s skirt is very full and adds quite a bit to the width of the piece. Promenade is one of many sculptures at State Fair Park, most are in and around 14 Flags Plaza.

Puerta del Color I and II
    Category: Outdoor Sculpture
Sponsor: Purchased with 1% CIP funds through the Edmond Visual Arts Commission Puerta del Color I and II are matching abstract sculptures created from stone and glass. They are easily seen when driving north on Kelly from Covell. Originally they stood on a walking path south of this location, however, vandals were damaging them, and they were moved about a half mile north. They are mounted on the median on top of a bridge which crosses a creek on Kelly Road, just south of Coffee Creek Road. The two sculptures are identical, but mirror images. The artist Gary Reiche has created several of the pieces of public art in Edmond. They consist of a rusticated stone slab to which is attached on one side and the top a gridwork of metal in which are hung translucent 4-5″ squares of colored glass. The glass swings freely in the breeze. The colors are gold, shades of turquoise, clear and various shades of tan.

There is plenty of parking on the street, and the city office buildings are at this intersection also. The prince is green, covered in warts, and has a big smile on his face. On his right foot there is a large blue ring. A gold crown, adorned with jewels, sits on his head. The frog is about 2 1/2 feet wide and about 2 1/2 feet tall, not including the crown. The sculpture is on a square concrete base, with the plaque on the northeast corner.
