Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with University of Central Oklahoma Jazz is a large bronze sculpture of three jazz musicians. The first man is bending over, playing his saxophone. The middle musician is standing tall, leaning slightly backward as he blows the horn held above his head. The third man, on the right, is wearing a bowtie. He is sitting as he plays the drums, and is looking slightly upward. Only the first man wears a hat. The musicians are placed very close to each other, and the drummer’s legs slightly wrap in front of the middle musician’s feet. The two plaques can be found on the left side of the sculpture. A concrete foundation, about 2 1/2 feet tall, is under the bronze sculpture.

Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Friends of Steve Gragg This bronze sculpture of a bowing jester is one of many outdoor public art sculptures placed around the city, most in conjunction with the Edmond Visual Arts Commission. The jester is in a typical costume, bowing forward, with his right leg straight and slightly forward, and his left leg bent directly beneath him. He holds an instrument in his left hand, and his right hand is open and outstretched. The hat folds down on the left side of his face. This is a fun piece and a nice addition to the sculptures along Broadway in downtown Edmond.
  • John L.R. Martin

    Category: Memorial/Monument; Outdoor Sculpture
As part of the 2007 Oklahoma Centennial celebration, this portrait of John Leonard Roosevelt “Pepper” Martin was installed on the west side of the Bricktown Ballpark. He was born in Temple, Oklahoma on February 29, 1904 and grew up in Oklahoma City. As a rookie, he batted .500 in the World Series, taking everyone by surprise. His 12 hits from 24 at bats remains an unbeaten record for a series average. In a matter of no time, “Pepper” Martin became a baseball hero and spent 13 years as a St. Louis Cardinal before retiring and becoming a manager of multiple minor league teams. Upon retirement, Martin attracted crowds to his home in Quinton, Oklahoma where he told countless stories about his life, focusing on family and spiritual values. This time spent together eventually inspired Don McClanen to found the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a now nation-wide ministry. Martin passed away in March of 1965 when he was 61 years old. In 2007, Oklahoma local artist Shan Gray was commissioned to honor Martin by creating this portrait bust and placing it outside of Oklahoma City’s ballpark.

Johnny Bench was born in Oklahoma City on December 7, 1947. During his 17 years in Major League Baseball (1967-1983) , he won 10 Gold Glove Awards, 2 Most Valuable Player Awards, and Rookie of the Year. He was voted an All-Star 14 times, batted 389 home-runs, and led the league in RBI’s three times for the Cincinnati Reds. In 1989, Johnny Bench was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. It is no coincidence that “Johnny Bench” sits at the main entrance behind home plate given that he played catcher his entire career. This 9 foot statue poignantly resides in the center of Johnny Bench Plaza. In addition to his traditional catcher gear, the statue includes an inscription that reads “a true Oklahoma hero.”

Sponsor: Purchased by Central Edmond Urban Board before the Edmond Visual Arts Commission was formed This is a charming sculpture showing two birds in flight along the median of Boulevard. The artist did a great job of showing flight by having one bird with its wings up and one with its wings down. I like that effect. This is one of many art pieces placed around town by the Edmond Visual Arts Commission, partnering with local businesses and individuals. Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Banc First On the north side of Edmond on Kelly Avenue stands this beautiful sculpture. It is located in front of BancFirst, on a concrete and stone patio, surrounded by gardens. This bronze sculpture shows a young girl, standing barefoot and tippy-toe on top of the world. Her hands are thrown out to the side, her head is held back, as she lifts her face to the sky. A smile graces her face, and her eyes are closed in the thrill of joy. The sculpted earth is about 40 inches high, and she stands another 40″ above that. Artist Angela Mia De la Vega is a world renowned sculptress who has won many awards. She primarily sculpts children and in her Statement of Purpose, she writes: “Freedom of spirit is my works’ purpose: To uplift and inspire feelings of pure love and joy. My fulfillment as an artist is complete if I feel that my sculpture stirs or awakens personal emotion in the hearts of its viewers.” This sculpture does just that! A bronze plaque at the base of the sculpture reads: Joyful Empowerment by Angela Mia De la Vega. Purchased by BancFirst, partnering with Edmond Visual Arts Commission – October 2015.

    Category: Memorial/Monument
Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Rand Phipps and Family This bronze sculpture depicts three irises and an unopened bud. It was created by Steve Palmerton/The Crucible and stands about 36″ high, mounted on a base about 18″ high. It stands in front of The Hope Center, a non-profit organization which helps families in need. The sculpture is a memorial to Judy Perry Phipps (6/23/56 – 4/27/14), presented by her family, partnering with the Edmond Visual Arts Commission. Judy Phipps’ obituary indicates that she was a teacher and artist, and a volunteer at the Hope Center. Among other things, she was a Master Gardener and we assume that irises were a favorite of hers.

Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Edmond Bar Association This golden colored statue is located in front of the Edmond Municipal Court, on the northeast corner of Littler and First. Justice is blind, as one would expect. She is tall and very thin. In her left hand, which is held up high in the air, she is holding a scale. Her right hand is down at her side, holding a long thin sword that is facing down. The sculpture is on top of a flat, square foundation that is on top of the walkway wall at the entrance to the courtyard. This is a wonderful piece to place in front of the city courthouse, and is one of many outdoor public art sculptures placed around Edmond.
