“Inclined” is a site specific piece that draws upon the history of the surrounding “Bricktown” district and its neighboring “Deep Deuce” district. The two histories are very different from each other, as Bricktown used to be an abandoned warehouse district and Deep Deuce was the cultural epicenter for African American music and culture, particularly jazz music. The history of Deep Deuce is a vibrant narrative between the racial tensions of the city and the thriving culture of the community in Deep Deuce. The imagery of “Inclined” is derived from the struggles of those original neighbors as well as the historic structures themselves; the railroads, loading docks, and post & beam construction of the warehouses. The imagery of “Inclined” is derived from the relationship of those original neighbors and the historic structures themselves; the railroads, loading docks, and post & beam construction of the warehouses. According to the artist, David Phelps, he was originally inspired by the writings of Dr. Bob L Blackburn who now serves as the Executive Director of the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Sponsor: Purchased by Central Edmond Urban Board before Edmond Visual Arts Commission was formed Innocence is located on the NW corner of S. Broadway and W. 1st St. in Downtown Edmond. It is one of many outdoor sculptures placed around the city by businesses or individuals partnering with the Edmond Visual Arts Commission. In this sculpture, a young woman is standing, holding a curved branch in front of her. Seven doves are sitting on the branch, all facing her. The woman has her hair pulled up and back, and she wears a long tapered dress. Her arms palms are turned up as she holds each end of the branch. The woman is looking downward slightly, looking at the birds in front of her.   Photos and description by silverquill at https://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMAD5W_Innocence_Edmond_Oklahoma.

“Intestinal Fortitude” was purchased and installed in February of 2009 from the Oklahoma City Public Art Competition where it had been on display at the Oklahoma City Municipal Building from October 2007-September 2008. It was commissioned by Connie Mashburn in honor of her son, Mike, and sits at the South May entrance to the YMCA in Oklahoma City. Slack describes his art as “primitive inspired art with a modern spin and a touch of humor.” He encourages his viewers to “sum up my art and titles with their own perspectives on the work” because interpretation is what makes art unique and interesting.
