“Gateway” is part of a series entitled “Sagg Portal” by artist Hans Van De Bovenkamp. The inspiration comes from the French word menhir, meaning standing stone. Van De Bovenkamp said that “these portals are to leave a mark by balancing shapes and stacks of metal relative to the landscape and environment.” One of the portals, “Gateway” is located in the Myriad Botanical Garden in Oklahoma City. His vision for the piece was to be a connection between the architecture and the nature in downtown. It is made of industrial’strength aluminum, similar in substance to the downtown skyscrapers, but its irregular curves recall the organic forms of the hills, trees, and lake of the Myriad Botanical Gardens. It is 16 feet high and painted red, really catching the eye of the garden visitors.
  • Giant Steps
    Giant Steps
Sponsor: Purchased by Central Edmond Urban Board before Edmond Visual Arts Commission was formed. This is a really nice sculpture for the kids to see. The height of the boy on the stilts catches your eye as you drive thru downtown Edmond. When I first saw it I thought it was a real boy and had to take a second look. A young boy is walking on a pair of stilts, looking slightly downward to see where he’s going. His right leg is forward, with his torso in front of the stilts. The big toe on his right foot is curled upward, indicating a tense footing on the stilt bar. Giant Steps is in a grassy area of the curb at the northwest corner of Broadway and Main. It is one of many public art pieces placed around the city by local businesses and individuals partnering with the Edmond Visual Arts Commission.

    Category: Outdoor Sculpture
Sponsor: Privately Owned by UCO The University of Central Oklahoma is the oldest school of higher learning in the state of Oklahoma. First known as the Oklahoma Territorial Normal School (for teacher education), it later became known as Central State University, and in 1991, the University of Central Oklahoma. The team mascot is the Broncho. The sculpture is made of metal and painted gold, however, it does not appear to be bronze. It is mounted above head-height on a concrete base which stands in an elevated six-sided garden. The broncho is rearing on its two hind legs, with its forelegs pawing the air, its mouth open and its ears alert. The sculpture has a large grassy field in front of it and it can be seen from a great distance, in its victory pose. There is no dedication plaque or sculptor’s name shown.

Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Sonic Corporation Sonic Corporation owns the sculpture, and this is a popular place to eat for people on this side of Edmond. The bird is tilted all the way on its left side, with wings spread wide. The talons are shown close to the body underneath. The sculpture is placed on a rectangular concrete foundation that sits in the grassy area on the northwest corner of Sonic.

    Category: Outdoor Sculpture
Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Hundred Oaks Village, Dale Jackson Mounted high on an ten foot high base of block, this eagle sculpture will take your breath away. We estimate the eagle body at 5 feet high, with a wing span of probably twelve feet. The sculpture is bronze, with defined sculpting of its feathers. Its beak is partially open with eyes that bore clear through you. It is a fitting emblem of the United States of America (much better than the Turkey, suggested at the time).

    Category: Indoor Sculpture
Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Joseph & Elizabeth Waner Artist bio: Kimber Fiebiger creates bronze sculptures that range from fun and whimsical, to classical and contemporary. She lives in Minneapolis yet her sculptures have been sold all over the country where she has won numerous awards. Besides being a fabulous sculptor, Kimber has created a home/gallery/studio that will amaze and intrigue you upon viewing. Ask anyone who drives by her Gallery at E Franklin and S 31st Avenues. Her building has been described as having the artful complexity of Spanish designer Antonie Gaudi combined with the surreal nature of Pablo Picasso. Her recent outdoor landscape brings to mind playful images of Dr. Seuss and the imagination of Lewis Carroll.
