Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Paws for Life The young boy in this piece is kneeling on the ground, giving his very large dog a big hug. The boy is barefoot, wearing a ballcap (on backwards) and overalls. His arms are wrapped wide around the sitting dog. The boy’s feet are crossed behind him and his toes are curled up. The dog’s very large face is resting on the boy’s shoulder, looking upward. First Love is located at the entrance to the Edmond Animal Shelter, an appropriate place considering the subject of the art work. Paws for Life is an organization that assists the Edmond Animal Shelter in caring for the animals there.

    Category: Outdoor Sculpture
Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Bank of Oklahoma In this sculpture, a young girl sits on her dad’s shoulders, looking up at something. The dad is pointing up towards the sky, and the girl is looking in the same direction. The man’s sleeves are rolled up to his elbow, and the girl is holding on to the man’s neck/lower facial area. The sculpture is life-size, but you can only see the figures from the man’s waist and up since the landscaping covers up the lower half of the piece. From the back of the sculpture you can see that the girl is wearing a dress with a bow at the back. First Star is one of many outdoor art sculptures placed around town by the Edmond visual Arts Commission partnering with local businesses and individuals.

    Category: Outdoor Sculpture
Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Oklahoma City Abstract & Title Company Fishing Hole depicts a young boy, sitting a log, fishing at the pond. Bronze fish are attached to the end of the fishing line, adding some nice touches to the sculpture. the boy is straddling the log, with his left leg on the log, supported by the left foot. His right leg is dangling off the log, slightly curved underneath it for balance. He holds the fishing pole with both hands, with his left hand in the middle of the pole, and his right hand at the back. The cuffs of his pants are rolled up. The sculpture is placed on a rectangular concrete base, near the gorgeously landscaped pond. This pond has an abundance of trees, other landscaping, and large rocks. A fountain is in the center. This is a popular pond for ducks to hang out.

    Category: Outdoor Sculpture
Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Sugar Hill Development, Barry Rice The sculptor’s website appropriately lists this piece as a “Gateway to the community.” Flor de Vida is located at the entrance to Sugar Hill Ranch, an exclusive neighborhood on the north side of Lake Arcadia. Translation is flower of life. According to the website, the stones for this piece were quarried over 100 years ago, and collected from surrounding counties to be used in this piece. The dimensions are 84″H X 72″W X 18″D. Two stone pillars about 4 feet apart form the vertical supports for the stone crossbeam at the top. A semi-circular blueish green glass piece sits on top of the horizontal stone beam. A circular bronze piece hangs from it, with a blueish green glass Y built into the top section of the circle. The hanging circular piece is centered between the two vertical posts. The entire piece is set on a rectangular concrete foundation.

Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with University of Central Oklahoma This two-piece sculpture by Kevin Box is located on the UCO campus, in front of (on the south side) of the brand-new Center for Transformative Learning. This building is two buildings east of Broncho Lake, at the center of campus. Visitor parking is just south of the building. One piece of this sculpture is a single leaf on a rock-type foundation. This is the most colorful of the four leaves, with green/yellow/red hues. This leaf is on the east side of the walkway to the building entrance. On the west side of the walkway is the larger of the two pieces, and it shows three leaves on a large rock-type foundation that is approximately 8 feet long. A brown and green leaf are upright, and a smaller gold-colored leaf is sideways, laying on top of the large green leaf.

In the spirit of the Great Plains, I chose the prairie dog as one of the images that I think best personifies this region. Because this is a sculpture in the Children’s Garden, I see the prairie dog as a fun animal that children can easily relate to. They are cute, fluffy, furry, cuddly and playful animals. However, because they are rarely pets that children can pat and interact with, this is an opportunity for children to do just that – play with them, pat them, sit on them, pretend feed them, and crawl in and around them. Prairie dogs have a unique way of greeting each other and my sculpture shows that adorable meeting – they come together and kiss. Actually, they are grooming each other. Meeting in this way. however, allows a child to crawl through the sort of bridge the two prairie dogs make with their embrace. The animals are also in a pose that allows children to SAFELY sit on their backs as well. Each prairie dog is approximately 42” long from head to tail, 16” wide and 24” tall.
