Sponsor: Dean Lively Gallery Artist bio:  Having lived in Oklahoma for most of my life, I have been inspired by the history, landscapes and urban design of the  46th state.  From the stories of the Native Americans to the “newspaper of the street,” my art is born to continue their dialogue. My wife and I love to travel and one of our favorite destinations is Santa Fe, New Mexico.  It was after a visit there in the Fall of 2011 that I was inspired to start painting professionally. I thank each of those who give words of encouragement along my journey; and a special thanks to those who have chosen to display my art in their private collections.

Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Edmond Parks Foundation “Dawn of Hope,” or as it is popularly known, “The Russell Daugherty Statue” commemorates the many young men and women from Edmond who served our country during World War II. Daugherty, a 24 year old co-pilot on a B-24 Liberator bomber flying out of Guadalcanal in the Pacific was the first young man from Edmond to die in WWII when he was killed along with his entire crew when his aircraft failed to clear jungle trees at the end of the runway. Surrounding the memorial, engraved paving stones, bear the names and unit designations of many other WWII veterans and defense workers associated with Edmond, who set aside their other dreams and aspirations to answer their nation’s call in a time of crisis. The title, “The Dawn of Hope” was chosen to recognize that before US Marines landed on Guadalcanal, the Japanese had been victorious in every campaign. After American troops were firmly established on Guadalcanal, to include Daugherty’s Bomber Group, the Japanese never advanced another inch. Years of hard fighting lay ahead, but the tide had been turned, and the sacrifices of men just like Russell Daugherty marked not the end of the fighting, not victory, but the beginning of the end for the Japanese and “The Dawn of Hope” for the allies. The “Dawn of Hope” purports to depict Daugherty on the last dawn of his life, heading to his aircraft. He has picked up his parachute and looks up as the sun clears the trees, with its glare reflecting from the lenses of his sunglasses. Because the statue faces east, that same sun catches Russell’s sunglasses every day, just as it did that fateful morning on Guadalcanal. “Dawn of Hope” life- sized bronze by Oklahoma artist Mary Lou Gresham, is located in front of Russell Daugherty elementary school on N. Boulevard. It was dedicated in 2009 and was sponsored by the Edmond Parks Foundation.

Sponsor: Edmond Visual Arts Commission partnered with Carol Ricks Artist bio Mark Lundeen is a highly realistic sculptor with a fine sense of detail and creates sculpture with fluid lines, balance and integrity. A native of Holdrege, Nebraska, Mark was educated at the University of Nebraska in Kearney and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. After graduating from college, Mark spent eight months in Europe studying the old masters. In 1981, he moved to Loveland, Colorado, established his sculpting studio and began a highly successful career as a sculptor. Mark can capture one moment in time and translate that moment into eternity. A natural born storyteller, he stages his artwork around the stories or emotions the characters portray, allowing each viewer to find a different version. His work has a strong physical presence, whether it is an aggressive athlete, a pensive elder or a shy child.

Artist bio: Paul comes from a family of artists and has drawn and painted his whole life.  After receiving an Associate of Arts degree from a local college in 1984, he accepted a job at the Smithsonian Institution doing taxidermy and model making and retired in 2010.  As a result of so much three-dimensional work in his museum job, his own personal artwork gradually began to transform from painting and drawing into sculpture.  Being an avid birder, waterfowl hunter, and taxidermist gives him constant anatomy and behavioral learning experiences that inspire his sculpture.

The satisfaction of making a thought, memory or emotion into concrete form is what drives me. Unlike cast work, my hand and spirit touches each piece from start to finish. It is a challenge to work in such a rigid, planar medium and to give it life and movement. With my work, I endeavor to create, with a minimal line, an elegant beautiful form. It is my hope that those who collect my sculpture will be inspired by the spirit, beauty and craftsmanship in each piece.” -Jeff Laing
