Oklahoma City University Bass School of Music
    Educational;  Theatre;  Visual Art
About: The Wanda L. Bass School of Music prides itself on fostering a creative environment that encourages exploration and collaboration. Faculty members at Oklahoma City University are active musicians and scholars whose first priority is teaching and mentoring. Performance opportunities abound with more than 250 events staged throughout the academic year, ranging from solo recitals to full-scale choral and orchestral works, as well as six opera and music theater productions.  Few schools have produced so many graduates who excel across the musical spectrum, as performers, educators, and composers. Fewer still have had alumni recognized with Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Awards. Only one institution from that elite company is an all-Steinway school and an Apple Digital Campus that has been honored by ASCAP with its prestigious national orchestral award for adventurous programming of contemporary music. The School of Music provides a professional education within the liberal arts curriculum and develops musicians equipped to make significant artistic contributions to society. Critical thinking, open inquiry, and artistic expression are fostered through the study of traditional intellectual disciplines and applied skills.  Our degree programs stress virtuosic versatility – integrating performance skills, music scholarship, pedagogy, and professionalism – to prepare students for music careers in the 21st century. The School of Music has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1944, and Oklahoma City University is now accredited in education by the National Council of Accreditation for Teacher Education (NCATE). Mission:  The School of Music provides a professional education within the liberal arts curriculum and develops musicians equipped to make significant artistic contributions to society. Critical thinking, open inquiry, and artistic expression are fostered through the study of traditional intellectual disciplines and applied skills.

  • Prairie Dance Theatre
    Prairie Dance Theatre
    Nonprofit;  Theatre
Prairie Dance Theatre is a small 40-year-old nonprofit arts organization that goes into elementary schools in Oklahoma City, during PE classes or in our after-school program, to teach kids the joy of moving their bodies in a fusion of dance and fitness. At the end of the school year, the students from the schools come together for community performances of the dances they’ve learned. We teach in schools that are underfunded at no charge to the school or dancers. Many of our students are exposed to drugs and gang violence regularly. Learning to dance encourages and inspires children to think about other things, like fun, physical activity, sharing and community. Many of the dancers in our program get no exposure to the arts except through Prairie Dance Theatre. We feel so lucky to watch our students blossom as they learn to express themselves through dance and as they gain experience and confidence in themselves. PDT helps change these students’ perspectives of the world around them, and what they can achieve.

  • The Pollard Theatre
    The Pollard Theatre
    Theatre
Pollard Theatre Company is a professional resident theatre recognized by patrons, critics and artists as one of the leading theatrical producers in central Oklahoma. The Pollard typically presents six major shows in a year-round season that demonstrates versatility and excellence in artistic standards, while respectfully challenging artist, audience and community alike. The Pollard enjoys a legacy of presenting some of the highest calibre talent in the region: performers who are also featured on the numerous stages in the Oklahoma City area, as well as faculty and emerging artists from local universities. Initially formed as a resident theatre company, our sense of ‘company’ now extends to the pool of local talent. Under the artistic leadership of W. Jerome Stevenson, the Pollard Theatre Company has established itself as an artistic haven for many of the state’s most gifted theatre performers. Many of these are favorite artists who consistently return to the Pollard due to its professional standards, production quality and production philosophy, and have come to consider the Pollard their creative home. While Broadway and the larger production houses trend toward spectacle and grand production values, the Pollard’s artistic focus is on the narrative. We believe that what audience members want is to get invested in the characters and the story, to have that moment of “I know that situation, I know those people, I know that conflict.” If we make the narrative sing, the audience will take away a better understanding of themselves, of their neighbors, of their own lives and of the “shared human experience.” We believe that in addition to it’s ability to attract the highest calibre artists, the Pollard production philosophy, quality and diversity has helped it develop larger and ever more sophisticated audience. Mission Pollard Theatre’s mission is to produce professional theatre that engages and inspires Oklahoma’s audiences; and contributes to the quality of life and economy of our community and state.
