The Third Wife

Based on the experiences of her own great grandmother, this accomplished first feature by Vietnamese director Ash Mayfair is a romantic throwback to the 90’s period films of Vietnam’s most acclaimed filmmaker, Tran Anh Hung.

In nineteenth century Vietnam, 14-year-old May becomes the third wife of wealthy landowner Hung. Soon she learns that she can only improve her status by asserting herself as a woman who can give birth to a male child. May’s hope to change her position becomes a tantalizing possibility when discovers she’s pregnant. However, faced with forbidden love, May soon comes to understand the tragic limitations of her situation.
